Mark 1:35-39

Jesus’ prayer habits were a strong departure from his contemporaries. Often praying alone in secret places, Jesus hid his communication with his Father instead of praying loudly in public places. Prayer is an act of worship and humility before an omnipotent God. God already knows what we need before we ask him. So when we go before the Father and ask for things, we ask remembering that God already possesses the power to give us what we need and that he is always generous and wise with his power.

Jesus prayed in a way that demonstrated this true humility. Rising early to pray, the first thoughts of his day were on his need for the Father’s protection, grace and love. Finding a secret place to pray not only provided for less distractions, it guaranteed his prayer wouldn’t be tainted by any temptation to perform for those watching him.

Jesus’ response to his disciples was equally as humble. Peter came with the news that the whole town was looking for him and yet Jesus ignored the statement and suggested to his disciples that it was time to move on.

Human nature is inclined to bask in success and to linger in the afterglow of new found fame. But Jesus’ desire was to serve and preach to all Israel. His holy ambition was to spread the Good News as far as possible so that those who turned from their sin to believe in him would have eternal life.
